The Island’s capital city, Valletta, was built in the 16th century by the Knights of St. John and with over 7,000 years of history Malta has a vast cultural heritage which includes cathedrals, palaces, forts and prehistoric temples which are older than the pyramids in Egypt and Britain’s Stonehenge. Malta’s culture is further reflected in the Roman Catholic religion which dates back to the time of St.Paul, however, there is also freedom of worship and association for all other religions. The country obtained its’ Independence in 1964, became a Republic in 1974 and joined the European Union in May 2004 and as from the 1st of January 2008 the Euro was introduced as Malta’s national currency. The official languages are Maltese and English while Italian is also widely spoken.
